Mary Hill Obituary

Mary L. Hill, a devoted mother, cherished "Church Mother," and a light to all who knew her, transitioned to her eternal home on March 6, 2026, at 6:15 a.m. She passed away peacefully at home, in the arms of her daughter, surrounded by love and devotion.

Early Life and Faith:
She was born on August 25, 1955, in Pell City, Alabama. Mary was the daughter of the late Mr. Ocie McCain, Sr., and Leona (Oden) McCain. At a very young age, she confessed to Christ and joined Jacob Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Mary was a cornerstone of her church community, where she "wore many, many hats," serving with a heart of gold.

Career and Creative Legacy:
Mary was a woman of intelligence and legendary work ethic. After attending Birmingham Southern College, she spent years at Liberty National Insurance Company. She later became a fixture in the community through her many years at the Walmart in Leeds, Alabama. To many, she was affectionately known as the "French bread lady." When Walmart first started baking fresh bread, Mary’s voice would ring out, inviting everyone to "come get your French bread," a memory that still brings a smile to those who knew her. Beyond her work, Mary was a gifted seamstress. She was a master quilter who poured her love into every stitch. She didn't just sew a little; she created beautiful, lasting quilts for countless families throughout St. Clair County and Birmingham, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and artistry.

New Lease on Life:
Following the passing of her husband, Dwight Dwayne Hill, on May 22, 2023, Mary moved to Birmingham to live with her daughter, Dechanda. For 1,019 days, her family watched her truly flourish. She became a dearly loved Church Mother at Hope Faith Church, and a fixture at the Homewood Senior Center, where she loved being the first person there to greet everyone each morning.

Family Legacy:
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, pride, and devotion in her children, Dechanda Presley and Natasha Hill; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tevin (Megan) Jones and their children, Atlas, Kairo, and Nova, Devon Jones and his daughter, Kai’Iyla Jones, Ronald Jones, and Courtney Hill; her devoted brothers and sisters, Ernestine Mixon, Ocie McCain, George McCain of Pell City, Alabama, Mary Ruth McCain of Bronx, New York, Wanda (Nathan) Wade of Riverside, Alabama; and
a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
